What eBay search can't tell you
Is it a fair price?
Every scooter is scored against the typical price for that model and condition, so you can see a bargain, or an overpriced one, at a glance.
Can you lift it?
We read the weight from each listing and show whether it folds by hand, folds itself, or splits into pieces for the boot.
How far away?
Most used scooters are collection only. Enter your postcode and we'll show how many miles each one is from you.
Battery first
Lithium or sealed lead-acid, new batteries or "needs batteries": we flag it, because new batteries can cost from £60 to £350 or more.
Safer sellers
Dealer or private seller, feedback score and warranty, shown on every listing. Scooters priced far below typical get a warning.
Can it fly?
Listings that say they're airline-friendly are marked, so you can find a lithium travel scooter for holidays.

The lightest folding mobility scooters
Lightweight scooters →Ranked by the weight sellers give in their listings (the middle of what they say). Some weigh the scooter without its battery, so check the maker's figure before you buy.
Choosing a folding mobility scooter
What is a folding mobility scooter?
A folding (or foldable) mobility scooter is a small, lightweight class 2 scooter, limited to 4mph for pavements and shops, that folds down so it fits in a car boot, on a bus or train, or in a cupboard at home. Most fold in a few seconds and weigh between about 12kg and 25kg, and many use lithium batteries that you can take on holiday.
Folding, auto-folding or boot scooter?
Fold-up scooters fold by hand in one piece. Auto-folding scooters fold themselves with a button or remote, which helps if bending is hard. Boot scooters split into a few lighter pieces instead, and are usually sturdier and cheaper used. Not sure? Try our six-question quiz.
New or used?
Scooters lose value quickly, so a used one can cost half the new price. The catch is the battery: ask how old it is and how far the scooter goes on a charge, and read our used scooter checklist before you buy.

Travelling with one
For cars, measure your boot and think about who lifts it. For flights and cruises, choose a lithium scooter whose battery meets the airline's rules and check with them before you book: see airline-friendly scooters.

How much is a folding mobility scooter?
On eBay UK today, a new or ex-demo folding or boot scooter typically costs £780, and a used one about £619. Auto-folding scooters cost more: about £949 used. These are asking prices including postage, so you can often pay less. Each model's page shows its own typical price.
Is it worth buying a used folding mobility scooter?
It can save you half the price of a new one, because scooters lose value quickly. The main risk is the battery: batteries wear out after a few years, and a replacement costs from about £60 for a basic pair to £350 or more for lithium. Ask how old the batteries are and how far it goes on a charge, buy through eBay so you are covered by the Money Back Guarantee, and prefer sellers with good feedback. Read our used scooter checklist.
What is the difference between folding, auto-folding and boot scooters?
A folding scooter folds by hand in one piece, like a pushchair. An auto-folding scooter folds itself when you press a button or use a remote, which helps if bending is hard. A boot scooter (or portable scooter) doesn't fold: it splits into a few lighter pieces (seat, battery, front and back) to lift into a car boot one at a time.
How heavy is a folding mobility scooter?
The lightest folding scooters weigh about 12–15kg; most are 17–25kg. Boot scooters weigh more in total, but their heaviest piece is often 10–15kg. Think about who will lift it: we read the weight from each listing so you can filter by it (595 listings in the UK today say 20kg or less).
Can I take a folding mobility scooter on a plane?
Often yes, if it has a lithium battery that meets the airline's rules (usually no more than 300Wh, or two batteries of up to 160Wh each). Rules differ between airlines, so check with yours before you book and carry the battery's paperwork. See airline-friendly scooters (115 UK listings today).
Do I pay VAT on a mobility scooter?
In the UK you may not have to pay VAT on a new mobility scooter if you have a long-term illness or disability and it's for your own use: ask the seller for VAT relief and fill in a short declaration. Private sellers don't charge VAT, so it doesn't apply to most used scooters.
Do I need a licence or insurance for a folding scooter?
No. Folding and boot scooters are "class 2" scooters, limited to 4mph, used on pavements and don't need registering, tax or a licence. Insurance isn't required but is a good idea for theft, damage and third-party cover.
