SLKFolding scooter

Before you buy a used Folding scooter

• Ask about the batteries first. How old are they, and how far does it go on a full charge now? Batteries usually last 2–4 years, and a new pair can cost £60–£200. "New batteries" in the listing is worth paying a little more for.
• Fold it yourself. Check the hinge locks firmly both open and folded, with no wobble in the frame or the steering column, and that you can manage the catches.
• Test drive it. Forwards, backwards, up a slope and round a tight turn. Listen for grinding from the motor, and check the brakes hold it on a slope when you let go.
• Check it fits your car and your life. Measure your boot, and think about who will lift it. If you want to fly with it, check the battery's watt-hours (Wh) on its label against your airline's rules.
• Charger, keys and paperwork. Make sure the charger, keys (if it has them) and any manual or service history come with it. A dealer warranty is worth having.
• Pay through eBay. eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers you if it isn't as described, even when you collect in person, but only if you pay through eBay. Never pay by bank transfer to a seller you haven't met.
