Before you buy a used Ultralite
- Ask about the batteries first. How old are they, and how far does it go on a full charge now? Batteries usually last 2–4 years, and a new pair can cost £60–£200. "New batteries" in the listing is worth paying a little more for.
- Lift each piece yourself. Ask the seller to take it apart while you watch, then lift the heaviest piece (usually the rear section) into your car boot. Check the catches and the seat pin aren't worn or loose.
- Test drive it. Forwards, backwards, up a slope and round a tight turn. Listen for grinding from the motor, and check the brakes hold it on a slope when you let go.
- Check it fits your car and your life. Measure your boot, and think about who will lift it. If you want to fly with it, check the battery's watt-hours (Wh) on its label against your airline's rules.
- Charger, keys and paperwork. Make sure the charger, keys (if it has them) and any manual or service history come with it. A dealer warranty is worth having.
- Pay through eBay. eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers you if it isn't as described, even when you collect in person, but only if you pay through eBay. Never pay by bank transfer to a seller you haven't met.

Questions
How much is a used Rascal Ultralite worth?
Based on current eBay UK Buy It Now listings, a used Rascal Ultralite typically costs £327 including postage, with the cheapest at £129. Newer scooters, scooters with new batteries and ones from dealers with a warranty sell for more. These are asking prices, so you can often pay less.
How does the Rascal Ultralite fold?
Rascal's Ultralite boot scooters. It's a boot scooter: it doesn't fold, but splits into a few lighter pieces (typically the seat, battery, front and rear) so they can be lifted into a car boot one at a time.
Can you take the Rascal Ultralite on a plane?
Usually not as standard: most Rascal Ultralite scooters use sealed lead-acid batteries, which airlines rarely accept. Look for a lithium version, and always check with your airline before you book.
